ABOUT PUERTO VIEJO
Puerto Viejo is famous for its bohemian vibe and flourishes entirely without the presence of international super chains and commercializing. One might say that is exactly the reason why little Puerto Viejo flourishes. Here the shops are locally owned and hippies from all over the world have set up their own little businesses, from restaurants and chocolate production, to jewellery stalls.
The locals here are a wonderful mix of indigenous Indians and Rastafarian and the atmosphere is laid back and very friendly - all "Pura Vida". Don't be surprised if a horse comes walking down the main road, mingling with the surfers and jungle jeeps.
Enjoy live music, from local calypso bands to international musicians who get together for a jam session. Watch the swordfish jump the waves and flocks of seabirds sail across the sky and stroll along to one of the many restaurants or bars for "The World's Best Mojito" or a Carribbean-style chicken and rice.
If you are shopping for Gucci handbags, this is not the place for you. If snorkeling, surfing, horseriding, jungleexploring, lingering on the beautiful unspoilt beaches, or simply enjoying the carribbean athmosphere with the local and multinational people here sounds tempting, this IS the place.
